Get ready for long days at the beach and balmy summer nights with this season’s top fashion trends.
Summer is here at long last, and that means long-awaited parties with friends, coastal getaways and dreamy days at the beach.
For those of us who have spent months of lockdown rotating between loungewear and activewear, the prospect of summer fashion is equally exhilarating and terrifying. Luckily, Surfstitch’s Head of Merchandise, Gabby Bate, is on hand to steer us in the right direction with the top fashion trends for this summer.
Summer fashion trends for men and women
Let’s start with the basics of colours and fabrics. Gabby says pastels and florals will be big, but so too will subdued colourways.
“Metallics will shine across key pieces,” she said.
When it comes to womenswear trends, Gabby points to pretty, delicate styles.
“I love all of the soft pastel hues which are coming through, I’m a sucker for lace detailing and additional trimming on tops and dresses. Floral trends are back in a big way across new ditsy prints and watercolour prints,” she said.
For the guys, it’s all about statement shirts and above-the-knee shorts for a more “playful” outfit this summer.
“As with women’s trends, there’s going to be more statement pieces being seen across both genders. New fits and fabric interests with louder colour pallets, graphics and checks are coming back into trend,” she said.
“‘90s denim is making a huge comeback, comfy chino variations and military styles options for nights out. Key pieces across headwear and the perfect pair of sneakers are an absolute must this summer.”
Top looks for the party season
The festive season is all about parties and celebration. And this year it will be even more special with family and friends reuniting after a tough year. This will almost certainly have an influence on our choice of clothes, Gabby said.
“I feel our clothes will very much consist of statement pieces whether it’s through colour or garments with unique fabrics and details. The more skin baring, the better!”
Key fashion and accessories for beach days
When it comes to beachy summer holidays, Gabby says investing in a key piece of swimwear and shorts at the start of the season is an absolute must.
“Shorts are still hot this season whether it be a trusty pair of denim cut-offs or a more fashion-forward knitted version,” she said.
With the sun blazing down from above, eyewear and headwear are obvious but important pieces to have in your arsenal this summer. Gabby also suggests investing in some essentials for those long beach days.
“I spend a lot of time at the beach with our family, so we are kitted out with our newly launched Private Label beach accessories styles,” she said.
“Large beach bags that hold everything from snacks, matchbox cars and Barbies are the most essential piece of all. Printed umbrellas and chairs are also going to be key parts of everyone’s beach get-up this year.”
